Violent Crime

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

And the liberal response to Tennessee's number 1 ranking will automatically be to outlaw and confiscate all the guns in Tennessee from all the law abiding citizens. Then the liberals will design research saying the crime rate has dropped in Tennessee due to the confiscation of the guns from the law abiding citizens. Of course they will leave that, "law abiding citizen" thing out. And the end result will be the little minded liberals will "feel good" about what they have accomplished even though the crime rate actually increased after the guns have been confiscated. But this will not matter as long as they "feel good". How self serving these liberals are to only do things that make them "feel good". Maybe they should drink more alcohol, that will make them "feel good".

jesse, If you go to the right2know page on this web site and count the number of caucasian and african-americans in the 56 new mug shots, you find 34 "Caucasian" and 22 "African-American." Of course those mug shots represent a range of alleged crimes, not all violent, but it suggests crime and violence are pretty much an equal opportunity circumstance across races.

Your comment reduces the value of humans to animals and has a distinct racist flavor to it. If you attend a church, given the area it would likely be a Christian congregation, please take a pew Bible and read the gospels earnestly. It might reset your attitude.

Why don't we just keep this simple? Let's break down the difference between talking percentages and ACTUAL NUMBERS. According to your sources Whites commit more crimes than African Americans based on the ACTUAL NUMBERS compiled by the FBI. But you want to talk percentages right? So let's keep this lesson REALLY, REALLY SIMPLE; Suppose there were only 5 members in your family and two of the 5 were in jail for various crimes. Percentage wise one could say 40% of your family members are criminals or jail birds now that looks like alot when in ACTUAL NUMBERS it's only TWO.

Percentages are just like the Bible you can always find something there to fit whatever point you think you are making. LOL

limiric (and jesse), you won't find "bible thumpers" in the bible as positive forces only as negative ones; but how or whether you want to explore that is all your business. Jesse you do not choose to "become" a heathen, no matter how hard you try. You have very limited choice in the matter.

The problem is the editorial cartoon fairly well captures the attitude around here, not withstanding the fact that you do need to dig into the statistics to identify where physical crime is concentrated. It is not too hard to identify where the "spiritual" crimes are located.

Interesting application of the TAO as a contrast & comparison Jesse. Glad you threw that in.

I have wondered once or twice if main tenets of the TAO had any influence (however slight) on Asimov’s ‘Three Laws’. Pure conjecture on my part but there are some thought-provoking resemblances.

No, FACTS don't distort, PEOPLE DISTORT THE FACTS to fit their own agenda. I haven't denied anything in the stats. You posted from a source that states according to the ACTUAL NUMBERS whites commit more crimes than African Americans - THAT IS A FACT BASED ON THE RESEARCH PROVIDED BY THE FBI according to YOUR ARTICLE.

Then you post another link listing the PERCENTAGE of crime among African Americans based on their population numbers and of course the implication here is for people to believe African Americans commit more crime than whites. However, if one goes back and looks at the ACTUAL NUMBER OF CRIMES COMMITTED AS PUBLISHED BY THE FBI one would see again the ACTUAL NUMBER OF CRIMES COMMITTED BY AFRICAN AMERICANS IS STILL LESS THAN THAT OF WHITES. Again to keep it REALLY, REALLY SIMPLE LIKE IN STATS FOR DUMMIES HERE'S ANOTHER WAY TO LOOK AT IT: If there are only 5 members in your family and 2 of them are morons, one could say 40% of your family consists of morons. 40% certainly sounds much WORSE than actual number of TWO and it paints a much more dire picture of the family to say almost half of them are morons.

I think it's telling about the morality of this country when they get up in arms about not getting into a national park, when a 95 year old woman can't her Meals On Wheels or a child battling cancer cannot NOW go for treatment and our service men and women are getting IOU's instead of a paycheck. That's the GOP's "thanks for your service". And the GOP strategy is to make it look like the President's fault, so he will LOSE, not win. All the GOP has to do is bring this bill to the floor and allow a vote. This is typical GOP obstructionism to bring down the President and likewise our country. That has been their plan since the day he was elected, just ask Mitch McConnell, he'll proudly tell you that.

Obama is as evil as they come and he wants people to suffer. There are those that will blame all of this on the GOP but the majority of Americans are starting to see what a despicable person Obama really is. And Harry Reid is not far behind as it is Harry who doesn't give a damn if a child gets cancer.

National Park Service is out of control.

Harry Reid is the one who doesn't give a damn about children with cancer.

BASH: But if you can help one child who has cancer, why wouldn’t you do it?

I checked the FBI site where the stats were gained to conclude that we were the most dangerous state in America according to news sources.

The great majority of these crimes were committed in the ” Metropolitan Statistical Areas” i.e. the large cities of Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga for instance.

Now, who predominately lives in cities? Well Liberals, blacks and Hispanics live there.

I could not find anything on the FBI site where crimes by race were listed. Why? The FBI site was loaded with tables and statistics but none on race. Why?

I did find at one site that 244 blacks were murdered in Tennessee in 2009 out of a total of 461 for all other races. This is 53% of all murders and a high murder rate of 23.01 in Tennessee.

This same site cited black population at only 13 percent in America but 47% of all murder victims in America!

A CDC site I found said that between 1999-2007 the homicide rate in America for whites was just 2.7 and for Hispanics 7.6. For blacks a much larger 23.1 rate.

How come these facts were not brought up by the Liberal mess media when Tennessee was billed as the most dangerous state to live in?

I don't watch any news on television. Too many sources on the web and it is easy to stop and validate a story from other sources. All TV news and idiot talk shows from both sides are crap.

Two sources saying the same thing doesn't validate the opinion of the author. The Thomas Library of congress has copies of the bill or legislation where an individual can read and reach their own conclusions.

For example: apparently as simple and straightforward, as the question of who shut down the federal government, there are diametrically opposite answers, depending on whether you talk to Democrats or to Republicans.

As for the House of Representatives’ right to grant or withhold money, that is not a matter of opinion either. You can check the Constitution of the United States. All spending bills must originate in the House of Representatives, which means that congressmen there have a right to decide whether or not they want to spend money on a particular government activity.

Whether Obamacare is good, bad or indifferent is a matter of opinion. But it is a matter of fact that members of the House of Representatives have a right to make spending decisions based on their opinion.

Obamacare is indeed “the law of the land,” as its supporters keep saying, and the Supreme Court has upheld its constitutionality. But the whole point of having a division of powers within the federal government is that each branch can decide independently what it wants to do or not do, regardless of what the other branches do, when exercising the powers specifically granted to that branch by the Constitution.

Perhaps the biggest of the big lies is that the government will not be able to pay what it owes on the national debt, creating a danger of default. Tax money keeps coming into the treasury during the shutdown, and it vastly exceeds the interest that has to be paid on the national debt. Even if the debt ceiling is not lifted, that only means that government is not allowed to run up new debt. But that does not mean that it is unable to pay the interest on existing debt.

According to government data the house has passed bills to fund every government function except the cost associated with the AHA. Harry Reid refuses to have a senate vote on those funding bills and refuses to allow a vote on anything except a continuing resolution that includes AHA cost.

It is a matter of opinion who is responsible for the furloughs and shut downs when funds for those functions have been approved by the house. The house has a constitutional right to not fund any activity and doing so is not without precedent.

I could care less if the AHA is funded and in place or not but I do think people need to be pleased our government is working as designed.

Friday was the fourth day of the government shutdown, and there’s still no sign of an exit. What’s surprising about the ongoing fight is how a small group of members of Congress have managed to bring Washington to a halt. Just months ago, Speaker John Boehner was warning that forcing the government to shut down over Obamacare or anything else was politically hazardous. Yet Boehner remains stuck, his strategy dictated by a small rump of members in the Republican caucus who refuse to budge. On Monday night, as government funding ran out, a group of around 40 hardline conservatives refused to support any resolution to fund the government that didn't defund Obamacare. Since Monday night, their goals may have become less clear, but their resolve has not weakened. While it’s widely believed that a “clean” resolution would pass the House handily, it would also likely lead to a right-wing rebellion in the caucus that would spell the end of Boehner’s speakership.

So who are those hardliners? To compile this list, we started with a roster that the Senate Conservatives Fund, a group aligned with Ted Cruz, created of representatives who were allied with them. We cross-checked it with the list of members who signed an August letter by Rep. Mark Meadows demanding that Boehner use a shutdown as a threat to defund Obamacare, and against other public statements this week. It's not a comprehensive roll — there’s no official “wacko bird” caucus that keeps a register — but it's a window into the small but powerful group of men and women in the House of Representatives who brought the federal government to a standstill.

So this is how the GOP plans to run a republic. We could be Somalia without all this government, police, fire departments, schools, health regulations, food regulation, ah it's a GOPer's dream. As far as Boehner goes, it's all about his job, not what's best for 300,000,000+ citizens.

Most of the mall is accessible and always was. No preference was "given" to the protesters. Those places that require NPS attendants are closed. Most of the mall is open. The intent of that story was to imply that favoritism was shown to the protesters. That is why the story is dishonest. If that makes no sense to you, then I am sorry.

I would have the same response if Native Americans were locked out of the Museum of the Native Americans and Iraq Veterans were allowed to protest (on the mall) the withholding of death benefits.

October 9, 2013 at 12:25 p.m.
lkeithlu said...

yes I do. We all have that right. As long as the group has applied for the permits. The million biker ride is a good example: if they had applied earlier for their permit they could have had a really great "no stop" ride. As it was, they applied too late. They could still ride through DC (nothing illegal there) but would have had to stop at traffic lights. The internet blogs made it sound that they were denied for political reasons but the "million Muslim March" was given a permit. The march (which dwindled in number even after the name was changed) was a "march" permit, applied for well in advance (Feb) and did not involved motorized traffic.

The fact is that DC is a city that still has to function, with streets and commuters, emergency vehicles like fire, police and EMS, services like oil, water, gas and electricity. It is not a violation of freedoms to ask people to follow procedure when they want to hold an event.
