A man charged in the 2012 slaying of a Red Bank businessman has pleaded guilty.

Segmund Boyd, 40, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery in the July 28, 2012, shooting death of Winston Gant, 65.

Gant was the father-in-law of state Rep. Gerald McCormick.

Charges against Boyd's co-defendant Adrian Gustus, 39, were dismissed on Tuesday, as well.

Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Don Poole sentenced Boyd to 18 years on both charges. The time will run together. The maximum penalty for second-degree murder is 25 years.

Police charged that the robbery-turned-murder happened when Boyd and Gustus confronted Gant at the back of his 2401 Briggs Ave. business/home after midnight.

Boyd's estranged wife, Crystal Brewer, 30, worked as a housekeeper for Gant.

She testified in a preliminary hearing shortly after the shooting. Brewer had delayed talking with police because, she testified, Gustus threatened to kill her if she did.

She also testified that Boyd was jealous and suspected, falsely, that she and Gant were romantically involved.

Gant struggled with the pair, who punched him repeatedly on the face before Boyd fired and the two men fled.

Brewer recently was charged in another robbery.

Zenard Davis, 51, told police he was drinking wine with Brewer in his home when she went to the door and let three black men into the residence.

One of the men held a gun on Davis while Brewer and the other two men went upstairs and stole a small safe along with two cell-phones and $1,300, Davis told police.

Fingerprints from the wine bottle matched Brewer's.

Brewer was charged with aggravated robbery and is free on a $1,500 cash bond, according to court records. She was not charged in the Gant slaying and has not been indicted.
