Kesler named Battle Ground Academy headmaster

Chattanooga native Will Kesler, 39, has been named head of school at Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tenn. The position becomes effective July 1, 2014.

Kesler joins BGA from Deerfield-Windsor School in Albany, Ga., where he has served as head of the Middle and Upper schools since 2010. He served in a variety of roles on the faculty of Girls Preparatory School for 13 years.

Kesler is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He and his wife, Julie, have three children.


Jensen book earns gold seal of excellence

"Skat and the Princess Brat," written by local storyteller Christyna Jensen and published by Trafford Publishing, was awarded a Gold Seal of Literary Excellence by Trafford after its review by the U.S. Review of Books in Titusville, N.J. The seal will be displayed on the front of every copy of "Skat and the Princess Brat."

Jensen is also the author of "Stories From Granny Mac's Patch," a collection of tales from her mother's ancestors, the William Bean family. The Beans were among the first Tennessee residents who weren't Creek or Cherokee.


Hixson aircraft at Talladega on Sunday

Hixson Museum of Flight is providing the historic aircraft that will fly over Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday before the Camping World RV Sales 500.

Prior to the race's green flag, two T-28 Trojans that served in Vietnam and a C45-H Expeditor that saw service in Korea and Japan will soar above NASCAR's track in Talladega, Ala., while the crowd honors America and its troops.

Lt. Col. Peyton "XMan" Dehart and Pete "Wheeler" O'Hare, who have served in combat tours from Desert Storm to Operation Iraqi Freedom, will pilot the two T-28 Trojan aircraft. The C45-H Expeditor will be manned by Gary "Mo" Franks. The flyover will occur at the conclusion of the singing of the national anthem.

Resides chosen for national honor society

Whitni Resides has been inducted into the National Society of High School Scholars.

The daughter of William and Kerre Resides is a student at Ringgold High School, where she is a member of the Future Leaders of America, advanced drama and tennis teams. She plays piano and performs with Closed Door Entertainment Troupe.


Mullins participates in veterinary field training exercise

John Mullins, owner of the Animal Care Center of Ooltewah and vice president-elect of the Ooltewah-Collegedale Council of Chamber of Commerce, recently attended a joint field training exercise in Terre Haute, Ind., with 74 members from the five National Veterinary Response Teams.

National Disaster Medical System's NVRT provides assistance following major disasters, emergencies or other events requiring federal support related to animals and public health. The training took place on the Air National Guard Base at the Terre Haute International Airport.

The training included lectures from subject matter experts, hands-on activities, group discussions with the National Guard's decontamination unit and physical fitness. Presentations in animal decontamination, shelter medicine, animal behavior and handling in a nonclinical setting, and disaster pain management were part of the training.
