Chattanooga golfers and longtime organizers Mike Jenkins and Hunt Gilliland will be the opposing captains for the 46th annual Tennessee Challenge Cup Matches next weekend at Stonehenge Golf Club at Fairfield Glade near Crossville. The competition pits 16 top amateurs from the state against 16 Tennessee Section PGA members. They will play eight four-ball matches and eight foursomes on Saturday and 16 singles matches on Sunday. Jenkins' amateur team will include former Hixson resident and Baylor School player Josh Nelms and Athens' Mike Poe, Tennessee Wesleyan's basketball and golf coach. Gilliland, the director of golf at Council Fire, has two Crossville pros, Kelvin Burgin and Greg Wyatt, at his disposal along with former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer and Chattanooga Golf & Country Club assistant Matt Brock, now at Lawrencburg G&CC. The amateurs have won the last three competitions but trail 27-18 overall.

Running

• Lucas Cotter and Teghan Henderson were the individual winners in leading UTC to both team victories Saturday in its Front Runner Invitational cross country meet at Moccasin Bend. There were eight teams in each race. Henderson's first-place 2-mile time was 10:41.10, and teammate Rebecca Greenwall was fourth with Keeley Stewart, Amanda Cotter and Jessica York 10th, 11th and 15th as the Lady Mocs totaled 41 points to 45 for Middle Tennessee. Bryan College's Hannah Schroeder was 20th. Lucas Cotter's 14:56.36 for the 5k course was followed by three MTSU runners and then third-place Bryan's Alex Stephens and Anthony Simpson before UTC's Paul Stuart, Mark Cole, John Gilpin and Trevor Janssen were seventh, ninth, 10th and 11th. Bryan's Connor Hatfield and Jason McLeod were eighth and 12th as the Lions finished three points behind MTSU.

• Tennessee Wesleyan, Lee University and Dalton State finished first, second and fourth out of 22 men's teams in the Berry Invitational cross country meet Saturday. Georgia Tech was third and Berry was fifth with Sewanee eighth and Covenant 13th. Lee was fourth out of 21 women's teams, behind Georgia, Georgia Tech and Birmingham-Southern, with TWC sixth, Covenant and Sewanee tied for eighth and Dalton State 10th. In the men's 8k, TWC's Roderick Bowman, Joseph Mullen, Samuel Hawkins and Caleb Young were fifth, ninth, 12th and 17th out of 207 individuals, and former Lee standout Mike Walker was sixth running unattached with current Flames Terris Elliott, Patrick Shultz, Emmanue Kipchumba and Camden Perez 13th, 15th, 21st and 22nd. Dalton State's Paul Patterson from Bradley Central was 18th. In the women's 6k, TWC's Robbicca Williams and Leah Chance were 10th and 14th with Lee's Ashley Matthews and Cayce Bryan 18th and 19th, Sewanee's Ansley McDurmon 20th and DSC's Natalie Hensley 21st.

• Peyton Miller won the Oktoberfest Ram Run 5-kilometer race Saturday by 69 seconds over Ethan Knowles with a gun time of 17 minutes, 16 seconds, and Dianna Leun, a frequent women's masters winner in area races, was third overall in 20:01 with Rachel Mason six seconds back in fourth place.

Soccer

• The Bryan College men's soccer team won the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season championship with a 3-0 win Saturday at Milligan. Daniel Branley scored from a long punt by goalkeeper Josh Oldroyd late in the first half and Rasheed Malcolm scored twice from Zach McCown corner kicks in the second half for the Lions (11-2, 8-1). Stephanie Gagnon had seven saves in a 2-0 loss to Milligan for the Lady Lions (4-8-1, 0-7-1). In another AAC doubleheader, Tennessee Wesleyan won 3-1 over the Union College women and 2-0 over the Union guys. The TWC men are 9-5-1, 7-1-1; the women are 9-6, 7-2.

• In the 1-1 tie for the Lee men's soccer team Friday night in Memphis, the Flames (5-3-4) were outshot 22-5 (10-1 on goal) by Christian Brothers but got nine saves from Tom Halsall and led for 64 minutes after Josh Ball's score from a Jonathan Finlay cross.

Football

• UTC football offensive coordinator Jeff Durden will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
