Almost perennial Georgia State Golf Association player of the year David Noll Jr. of Dalton will be paired with Roswell's Billy Mitchell in four-ball match play this morning and alternate-shot foursomes this afternoon in the Southeastern Challenge Match at Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee in Eatonton, Ga. The biennial event involves mid-amateur and senior golfers representing Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Noll's afternoon grouping will include former Bradley Central, Cleveland State and Lee University athlete Stan Sherlin of Montgomery, Ala., a 52-year-old member of the Alabama Golf Association board of directors and multiple state champion who tied for third last month in the Alabama Mid-Amateur tournament. Seventh-place Mid-Am finisher Robson Copenhaver of Scottsboro also is on the 12-man Alabama team. The competition will conclude Sunday with three-ball matches.

• Lee University overwhelmed a good Christian Brothers team 7-1 in Gulf South Conference women's soccer Friday evening in Cleveland, Tenn., but the men's game in Memphis wound up 1-1 despite a 22-5 shots advantage (10-1 on goal) for CBU. Summer Lanter began the scoring for the Lady Flames (8-3, 5-1) by following up her own blocked shot just 4:29 into the game, but CBU (9-2-2, 3-2-1) equalized on a Chelsea Cassacia header at 7:49. By 26:11, though, Ode Fulutudilu had scored on a breakaway and Leah Fortune on a direct kick for Lee, and Chloe Rader, Laura Thacker, Danielle Ciabattone and Fortune added second-half goals -- Thacker and Fortune from Debbie Rogers assists. Josh Ball scored for the Lee men (5-3-4) in the 24th minute from a cross by Jonathan Finlay, but CBU (6-6-1) netted the equalizer with just under five minutes left in regulation. • Crystal Mackeyzk returned from an injury and assisted on all three goals as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga soccer team pulled out a 3-2 win over visiting Francis Marion (0-14) in Friday's game at Finley Stadium. Clare Latham netted a Mackezyk header from Andria Aurand's corner kick for UTC (5-9) in the 12th minute, and Kelly Crew made it 2-0 early in the second half. But Allie Duckworth and Chanel Harris goals from Yasmin Bunter assists at 50:23 and 63:14 tied the match before Monica Speth converted another Mackezyk pass into a lasting Mocs lead at 75:11. Taylor Mangrum made nine saves in the win.
• Berry College swept host Sewanee in Southern Athletic Association soccer Friday, 2-0 in the women's game and 3-0 in the men's. Kim Fischer scored from a Molly Johnson assist in the fourth minute of the doubleheader and Tessa Piety added a penalty-kick goal in the final minute of the women's game for Berry (10-3, 3-1). Sewanee (9-3-1, 2-2) led 14-11 in shots and 9-3 in corner kicks in that game. Josh Hughes, David Shaw and Evan Echols scored for the Berry men (7-4-2, 3-0-1), dropping the Tigers to 6-6-2, 1-3.
Volleyball
• Visiting UNC Greensboro won the first two sets and held on for a 3-2 win over UTC in Southern Conference volleyball Friday evening at Maclellan Gym. Sarah Batterton had 11 kills and Briana Reid had nine plus 14 digs in the 25-11, 25-16, 19-25, 18-25, 15-8 defeat for the Mocs (3-19, 2-5), who got 19 assists from Anne Bachmann, 16 assists and 15 digs from Catherine Chason and 25 digs from Melissa Green. Olivia Humphries had 14 kills for UNCG (11-9, 4-3), and Karrian Chambers and Vicky Harley had 13 and 12. "It is a tough loss, but we battled hard," Mocs coach Travis Filar said in a UTC release. "We rebounded really after the first two sets and gave it all we had against a great Greensboro team."
• The Bryan College volleyball team improved to 26-1 overall and 15-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a 3-0 home win Friday over Milligan. Kara Stamper had nine kills and Carolyn Evans and Meghan Lowry added eight and seven for the Lady Lions in the 25-22, 25-18, 27-25 victory, while Corrie Walker had 18 digs and four aces and Taylor Fink had 30 assists.
