The Canadian band Barenaked Ladies is best known either for creating one of karaoke's most challenging songs in "One Week" or for creating the theme song for "The Big Bang Theory."
The former requires a good deal of vocal dexterity and has tons of pop-culture reference. The latter is an homage to geekdom, something writer Ed Robertson said he is very familiar with. Robertson told a Comic Con audience last month that he had just finished reading Simon Singh's book on cosmological theory when he decided to write a song about it. Pleased with the results, he sent it to the producers of new show being developed called "The Big Bang Theory," which premiered in 2007.
They loved it and asked the band to write the theme music.
Robertson also wrote the introductory music for the 30th edition of Dungeons & Dragons, he told the Comic Con audience before leading them in singing the entire "Big Bang" theme - there are two verses besides the one featured in the show intro.
"I am like an old-school uber-geekster from way back," he said. "My geek cred is at an extremely high level."
Barenaked Ladies will perform Friday, Nov. 1, at the Tivoli Theatre.
"One Week" was on the band's debut album, "Stunt," which was released in 1998. It was a No. 1 hit for the group, which also includes Tyler Stewart, Jim Creeggan and Kevin Hearn. Steven Page, who sang the chorus on "One Week," left the band before the release of "All in Good Time" in 2010.
