Give respect due to our veterans

This is an open letter to the Rev. Al Sharpton: I hope you say your thanks to our country's vets for protecting your First Amendment rights and other freedoms in this country. Can you remember the far left morons when they featured President Bush as Adolf Hitler? And now, we have our far right morons waving the stars and bars to no avail. I think you should give equal time to both types of morons. Never do I hear you or others discuss the great sacrifices of our brave soldiers dying on a daily basis. It is a mortal sin to allow our soldiers four, five and six tours of overseas duty in harm's way. Why not advocate for reinstating our draft, the great equalizers, rather than stirring the pot of sexual, racial and religious prejudice? Let's make our youth accountable to the U.S.A. For myself, I can't comprehend living in this country and not being a veteran. I am a proud veteran, as were my father, father-in-law and uncle. My niece proudly serves today. Now, are you a vet? If not, why not?

Meat industry is frightening

I am not scared of all the witches, zombies and assorted goblins wandering about on Halloween. What really scares me is the meat industry. This is the industry that: Mutilates, cages and butchers billions of cows, pigs and other sentient animals. Feeds carcasses of cats and dogs killed in pounds to chickens. Exposes undocumented workers to chronic workplace injuries at slave wages. Exploits farmers and ranchers by dictating wholesale market prices. Punishes documentation of its abuses through unconstitutional "ag-gag" laws. Promotes world hunger by feeding nutritious corn and soybeans to animals. Generates more greenhouse gases than any other human activity. Generates more water pollution than any other human activity. Creates a permanent "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico that dwarfs the BP oil spill. Creates deadly antibiotic-resistant pathogens by feeding antibiotics to animals. Creates epidemics of Salmonella, Listeria and other infectious diseases. Promotes mortality from diabetes, heart failure, stroke, cancer and other diseases. Now, that's really scary. And this is why I am dropping animal products from my menu.
