The long-awaited first basketball game for Dalton State College as a four-year school turned out to be a thrilling win Wednesday night in Mobile, Ala., against established NAIA program Spring Hill. Playing for former NCAA Division I and national champion Division II coach Tony Ingle, the Roadrunners won 69-66 as Demetrice Jacobs had 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals. Ricky Sears scored 18 points, including the basket that put them ahead to stay at 59-57 with 4:19 to play. Raheem Mosley scored 11 points for DSC, which totaled 16 steals and had a 12-25 advantage in turnovers.

• The Hiwassee College men's basketball team, again directed by Hugh Watson -- a former Hiwassee player and one of the coaches from the Madisonville school's junior college glory days -- won 67-52 Wednesday night at Bryan with Justin Browner scoring 18 points and matching Tyler Johnson with four steals. LaZerick Boyd had 13 points and Joel Bailey had 10 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Tigers. Brandon Cole led Bryan (0-2) with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Jeff Long and Robert Troino scored 14 and 12 points.

• Tennessee Wesleyan began its men's basketball season with a 98-68 loss Wednesday at NAIA Division I member Pikeville (Ky.), which got 27 points from Bruce Reed. Dante Turnipseed, Shannon Smith and Tyler Burse scored 15, 14 and 13 for TWC, which is in the NAIA's Division II. Smith added nine rebounds and five assists.

• Ish Sanders from Cleveland High School was selected from Carson-Newman along with returning South Atlantic Conference men's basketball player of the year Antoine Davis on the preseason all-conference first team released Wednesday. CNU's Eagles were picked to finish second behind Lincoln Memorial. Sanders was a first-team All-SAC postseason choice last year after being a close second to Davis in the league's scoring leaders at 18.7 points a game.

Soccer

• Samford University ended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's soccer season with a 7-1 win Wednesday night in Birmingham. The Bulldogs are seeded fourth for the Southern Conference tournament. Crystal Mackezyk scored for UTC (5-14, 0-11) from a long pass by Andria Aurand that cut Samford's margin to 2-1, but Malcanisha Kelley, Trine Taule and Sara Smeltzer each had two goals for Samford (13-5-2, 6-3-2), which outshot the Mocs 24-11 and had a 9-0 dominance in corner kicks.

• Emily Lambert scored three goals as Bryan College beat visiting Virginia Intermont 4-10 in Appalachian Athletic Conference women's soccer Wednesday. Shelby Julian had the last goal for the Lady Lions (6-9-1, 1-7-1), and Alex Kuh and Haley Julian had assists. Stephanie Gagnon made six saves.

• The Covenant College men's soccer team beat Piedmont 3-0 with advantages of 32-4 in shots and 10-2 in corner kicks in an USA South doubleheader Wednesday evening, after the women's teams played to a 1-1 tie. Garrison Dale netted a corner kick in the first half and Snoopy Davidson and Michael Arango added late goals for the Scots (11-5-3, 5-3-1) from assists by Hudson Brock and Danny Knight. Bethany Logan scored for the Lady Scots (9-8-2, 7-3-2) from a Rachel Buys pass at 54:30, but Laura Goodwin drilled an equalizer for Piedmont (14-2-2, 9-1-2), clipping the crossbar on the way into the net. Lucy Johnson made eight saves for Covenant.

Equestrian

• The Sewanee equestrian team was the high point team last Saturday and the No. 2 team Sunday, behind Middle Tennessee State, at the Maryville College IHSA Show. Sewanee's Elizabeth Corey and Mary Marshall Fariss were the show's top two point compilers Saturday, and freshman Emma Scudder was the reserve high point rider Sunday, when she won the open fences category and was fourth in open flat. Corey was first in intermediate fences and second in intermediate flat Saturday, when Fariss was first in novice flat and second in novice fences. freshman teammate Leslie Goodman won in advanced walk/trot/canter and fellow freshmen Megan Hopson, Kathryn Miller and Lindsay Stevenson also had firsts. Hopson repeated her advanced walk/trot/canter section win Saturday on Sunday, when Sewanee senior Linnea Carver won intermediate flat.
