Mike Evatt, chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Education, will run for the county's Circuit Court Clerk position.

Evatt today announced his candidacy for the post, which is being vacated by Paula Thompson.

"I firmly believe my tenure as a member and current chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Education has been productive and has contributed to the growth of a school system that is poised to meet the challenges of preparing our young people for the future," he said in a statement. "I now propose to apply that same mindset of service leadership and management skills to this position"

Evatt said public service "at any level has unique requirements that are non-negotiable in order to ensure a job well done. I believe that my management experiences, communication skills, and leadership abilities have prepared me to successfully meet the requirements of this office and to therefore be a viable candidate for the office of Circuit Court Clerk."

He retired as director of buildings and grounds in 2010 from Hamilton County Schools. Evatt has served on the school board since 2010.

Hamilton County Commission Chairman Larry Henry also has expressed interest in the post, though he said he hasn't made a decision.
