Man, 23, drowns in Lake Allatoona

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. - A 23-year-old man has drowned in a Northwest Georgia lake.

Authorities say Nicholas Alexander was spending the day on Lake Allatoona with his parents on Sunday when he dove off a rental boat near the swimming beach at Red Top Mountain State Park and didn't make it to shore.

WSB-TV reports that his body was found shortly before 6:30 p.m. Sunday in about 30 feet of water.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources Sgt. Mike Barr said witnesses on the beach heard Alexander call for help, but by the time help arrived it was too late.


Soldier killed in Afghanistan

ATLANTA - A Georgia soldier who was based in Colorado has died of combat injuries in Afghanistan, military officials said.

The U.S. Department of Defense said in a statement Sunday that 28-year-old Staff Sgt. Joshua J. Bowden died Aug. 31.

Bowden, who was from the west Georgia town of Villa Rica, died of injuries after enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire while on dismounted patrol in Ghazni, Afghanistan, authorities said.

He was assigned to the 242nd Ordnance Battalion (EOD), 71st Ordnance Group (EOD), at Fort Carson, Colo.

Bowden joined the Army in late 2005 and was on his second deployment, The Gazette of Colorado Springs reported. He previously deployed to Afghanistan from 2008-09.


Georgia Tech students robbed

ATLANTA - Authorities say two Georgia Tech students were robbed at gunpoint while walking along a campus street.

Police say the crime happened around 2:15 a.m. Monday, as the students walked east on Sixth Street near Fowler Street.

A crime alert from the Georgia Institute of Technology states that two men approached the students and demanded their belongings. Authorities say one of the suspects was armed with a handgun.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the suspects were last seen headed east on Sixth Street toward Techwood Drive.


Man killed in inmate fighting

NASHVILLE - Authorities are investigating several fights involving more than a dozen inmates at the South Central Correctional Facility in Clifton, Tenn., that left one man dead.

According to WKRN-TV, the fights seemed to break out simultaneously around 1 p.m. Sunday in the facility's dining hall.

Officials say 15 inmates were involved. Five suffered injuries and were taken off-site to area hospitals. One inmate died at the facility from his injuries. His name has not been released.

Officials say no staff members were injured during the fights.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incidents.
