Police say girl, 14, taken from home

ELLENWOOD, Ga. - Police are searching for a 14-year-old girl after they said home invaders abducted her from her house southeast of Atlanta.

Police early Tuesday morning were stopping cars and checking them. The FBI was helping, said Special Agent Stephen Emmett.

The two men pried open a back door of the home in the Ellenwood area around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, Clayton County police said.

The home invaders demanded money and jewelry, Clayton County police Officer Phong Nguyen said. When the woman said she didn't have any, one of the men shot and killed the family dog, he said.

Police said the men then took Ayvani Hope Perez, 14, who is 4 feet, 9 inches tall and 93 pounds. She's described as Hispanic, with brown eyes and black hair.

Invasive ants found in Georgia

GRIFFIN, Ga. - University of Georgia officials said an invasive ant species native to South America has been found in Georgia.

UGA Extension agent James Morgan said he found the ants Aug. 15 at an assisted living facility after its director called.

Morgan said the ants differ in color from fire ants and other types commonly found in Georgia and they behave differently as well. He said the ants move erratically and don't march in straight rows.

Morgan sent a sample of the ants to an entomologist, who confirmed the insects are Nylanderia fulva-- commonly known as tawny crazy ants.

Officials said the ants are considered a nuisance because they're attracted to electricity and travel in masses.

Man chargedin shooting death

KNOXVILLE - An East Tennessee man has been arrested and charged with criminal homicide after investigators found a body along a roadside in Union County.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday charged 41-year-old Kevin Lee Waggoner of Union County. Investigators said Waggoner shot and killed 46-year-old Michael Adam Woodby after a confrontation Monday night in Luttrell.

The two were neighbors and lived on Highway 370 in Union County. Woodby's body is being sent to University of Tennessee Forensics for autopsy. Waggoner has been booked into the Union County Jail on $250,000 bond.

Wandering cow caught in pen

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. - A cow with a history of wandering into traffic on busy freeways south of Atlanta has been corralled.

Authorities said the animal was captured about 3:30 p.m. Monday after it wandered into a pen built to ensnare it.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jill Goldberg told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that authorities corralled the cow and then tranquilized it.

The cow, known locally as "Kevin the Cow," sometimes grazed in the median of Interstate 675 and showed up from time to time near the highway in Clayton and Henry counties. Henry County police say 911 switchboards were lit up when the animal came out of the woods to graze by the freeway.

Police suspect it was responsible for at least one traffic accident.
