Braxton Bragg

A program on "Braxton Bragg and the Struggle for Command Cooperation" will be presented at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, by the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Rather than Chickamauga Battlefield, this one will take place at Bragg Reservation on Missionary Ridge, where the Confederate commander had his headquarters.

The program is subtitled "Not Knowing a Friend From a Foe" to illustrate the command struggles within the Army of Tennessee that occurred after the Battle of Chickamauga in the fall of 1863.

Following the Confederate victory at Chickamauga, some of Bragg's commanders seemed more interested in finding ways to oust the Confederate commander then they were in focusing on besieging the Army of the Cumberland in Chattanooga. Though small in numbers, these conspirators were vocal enough to cause President Jefferson Davis to make a visit to the army in October 1863.

How detrimental was this in-fighting to the Confederates' ability to maintain a siege and regain control of Chattanooga in the fall of 1863? Park rangers will offer some insight.

Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for the one-hour program.
