University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore soccer player Clare Latham was announced Wednesday as the Southern Conference student-athlete of the week, and UTC's Teghan Henderson is the women's runner of the week. Latham scored the tying goal and took the blocked shot that became the assist for the winning score in the Mocs' game at Tenessee Tech, and she leads the team with four goals and 10 scoring points. An early childhood education major, she had a 4.0 grade point average last year. The soccer team opens SoCon play by hosting Davidson at 7 p.m. Friday at Finley Stadium, and admission is free. Henderson won the Georgia State Invitational 4-kilometer race by 18-plus seconds in 14:07, leading the Lady Mocs to a second-place team finish.

• The Covenant College men's soccer team lost 3-1 Wednesday at Oglethorpe. Hunter Harrison headed in a Roy Anderson assist for the Scots (5-3-2), who moved into the 10th spot in the NSCAA's NCAA Division III South Atlantic regional rankings this week -- the only USA South team in the top 10.

• Bryan College men's soccer coach Joey Johnson and his team took time before their home match Tuesday night against Truett-McConnell to honor the memory of Hayden Lavo, a 2010 magna cum laude graduate and three-year soccer Lion who died in his sleep during a nap last Thursday at his home in Alaska. He was 26. Johnson, who was the associate head coach when Lavo played for the Dayton school, made some comments about him and the Lions stretched out his No. 25 jersey on their bench before the game, and they wore black armbands. On the Bryan website, Johnson says, in part, "Hayden was a devoted and loving husband, committed and loyal teammate and gracious humble servant of people. ... He embraced God's love and grace." Dr. Sandy Zensen, who was Lavo's head coach and remains a part-time Bryan faculty member, writes, "Hayden was a wonderful young man; a man of great faith, Christlikeness, gentleness of heart and integrity well beyond his years -- suddenly called 'home' by our Heavenly Father. I remain thankful to God for permitting me to have crossed paths with the young man."

Volleyball

• Sewanee lost 3-0 at Centre College in Southern Athletic Association volleyball Wednesday. The set scores were 25-19, 25-17, 25-22. For Sewanee (10-4, 1-2), Kayla Sewell had 12 kills, Jamie Kosman made 14 digs, Rachel Schuman and Walker Buxton had 10 assists each and Caroline Montgomery took part in six blocks. Catherin Janszen had 11 kills for Centre (8-2, 2-1).

• Cleveland High School graduate Payton Tipton had 20 digs in King University's 3-1 home volleyball win Tuesday night against Concord University. That was her fifth match this season with at least 20, her third in the last four.

Golf

• Walker Valley High School graduate Cortnee Young had King's second best score and tied for 11th at 155 in the 11-team Tusculum Fall Classic women's golf tournament that ended Tuesday at Link Hills Country Club in Greeneville, Tenn. King's Elizabeth Swallow was the medalist with a second-day 71 for a 147 total, but UNC Pembroke repeated as the team champion with a 607, winning by 13 strokes; King was sixth at 634.

Baseball

• The Chattanooga-based 16-under Tennessee Twisters baseball team won three games last Sunday and reached the semifinals in the rain-shortened Triple Crown Fall Frenzy in Marietta, Ga. Keaton Baker hit a tying two-run double in the Twisters' final at-bat against the Signature Park Hawks and then scored the winning run on Grant Cordell's groundout. The Twisters erupted in extra innings to win 9-3 over the East Cobb Orioles, when Brandon Willingham got the pitching win in relief after Trey Catanzaro took a perfect game into the fifth, and Garrett Wilbanks pitched a complete game for his second win of the day in a 7-2 defeat of the Fat Cat Thunder. But the East Cobb Titans beat the Twisters 8-1 in the semifinals and then won the championship.
