Greater Chattanooga area high school football matchups for Oct. 3

Sunday, September 29, 2013

(All kickoffs at 7:30 p.m. EDT unless noted)

Friday, Oct. 3

Cleveland (4-2, 2-0) at East Hamilton (4-1, 1-1)

An early peek: This one may last till midnight with the area's top two passers (Cleveland's Austin Herink, Hurricanes' Hunter Moore). While the Blue Raiders were taking a thumping at Knoxville West in a game of ranked 5A teams, East Hamilton enjoyed an open date Friday. This is the first meeting between the two, now in District 5-AAA together.

Notre Dame (4-1, 2-0) at Signal Mountain (4-2, 2-0), 7

An early peek: Another of the big games that should decide district championships -- although each will still have 7-AA games to play. Notre Dame was off last week and coach Charles Fant took the opportunity to go to Ohio State with junior prospects Auston Banks and Kareem Orr, but the Irish had coaches in the stands in Cleveland as Signal Mountain fell behind early and eventually lost to Bradley Central. This matches two of the area's top rushing standouts in the Irish's Banks and Signal's James McClellan.

East Ridge (3-3, 2-0) at Hixson (4-2, 2-0)

An early peek: East Ridge had its three-game win streak snapped by previously winless Loudon last Friday while Hixson went on the road and snatched a victory at Livingston Academy. The Wildcats were selected preseason favorites to win District 6-AA, and they've already beat Tyner, but East Ridge was selected as a championship dark horse.

McCallie (3-3, 1-1) at Baylor (4-1, 1-1)

An early peek: The crowd will be capacity and the atmosphere electric as the two longtime and Division II-AA rivals square off. Baylor has won four straight over the Blue Tornado but has played something of a patty-cake schedule compared with that of McCallie. The Red Raiders had an open date last week while McCallie lost to top-ranked Ensworth.

Bradley Central (4-1, 1-0) at Ooltewah (5-1, 2-0)

An early peek: Although running back Desmond Pittman (knee) sat out the second half of last week's win over Dobyns-Bennett, Ooltewah's Owls turned to the passing game and got good showings from quarterback Brody Binder and wide receiver Michael Williams. Early reports were that Pittman sitting in the second half was a precautionary move. Bradley has been a more than competent passing team behind quarterback Brett Standifer.
