MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Prosecutors say a Memphis man has been convicted of fatally shooting a teenager after a birthday party in the Frayser community.

In a news release, Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said today that 20-year-old Lederrius Thomas was convicted of first-degree murder and automatically sentenced to life in prison in the death of 16-year-old Rickey Mayes.

The shooting occurred on Oct. 2, 2011, following a birthday party. Witnesses said 20-year-old Tarin Harris and Mayes got into a vehicle to leave, but Harris had to stop because people were in the street.

Thomas then walked up to the vehicle and fired several shots, killing Mayes and wounding Harris.

Thomas also faces 15 to 25 years in prison for the attempted murder of Harris. Sentenced is scheduled for April 25.
