Area trio wrestling All-Americans — and more Chattanooga area sports news

Hixson's Brody Gregory and Bradley Central's Knox Fuller and Toribio Navarro earned All-America honors at the National High School Coaches Association wrestling tournament last weekend in Virginia Beach, Va. Wrestling against competition in their respective grades, Gregory placed second among freshman heavyweights, Fuller was sixth in the freshman 120-pound bracket and Navarro was eighth among junior 113-pounders.

Golf

• Former Baylor School athlete Phil Spitalny won the Georgia Four-Ball golf tournament this past Sunday at Albany, Ga., with fellow Athens resident Tyler Hogan. The event was shortened to two rounds and Spitalny and Hogan tied three other duos at 3-under-par 141 and won a six-hole playoff. Calhoun football coach Hal Lamb and Adairsville's Rick Brown tied for seventh at 144, and Bob and Mike Nance of Calhoun tied for ninth overall and shared first place in Flight 3 at 145. Chris Tallent Sr. of Rocky Face and Kyle Pettyjohn of Dalton won Flight 2 at 146.

• Dalton State won the six-team North Georgia Chick-fil-A Spring Invitational golf tournament Monday and Tuesday at Dahlonega with a two-round 589, one stroke better than Brewton-Parker. DSC's Chase Jones was the individual runner-up with a 143 (73-70) in the Roadrunners' first team win, while Anthony D'Angelo and Tobias Ebner tied for ninth and 11th at 148 and 151 and Tyler Mitchell and Levi Nix shared 19th place at 154.

Baseball

• Andres Nelo was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs, Siosi Poti was 3-for-4 with two triples and three runs scored and Blake Ray was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs as the Lee University baseball team beat visiting Tennessee Temple 17-2 on Tuesday. Nathan Wierzgac, Cameron Scott and Cameron Brewster each also batted in two runs for the Flames (22-13), who led 14-0 after three innings. Caden Shadrick was 2-for-4 and Josh Thomas was 1-for-2 with a two-run double for Temple (8-15).

Softball

• Allison Vaughn from Heritage High School went 4-for-8 and scored three runs as Piedmont College, ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division III, beat visiting Covenant 8-0 and 10-2 in USA South softball Tuesday. Jordan Brett had the only hit for Covenant (10-22, 3-17) in the first game and was 3-for-3 with a homer and an RBI double in the rematch. Piedmont is 31-3, 19-1.

• The NAIA's 10th-ranked Reinhardt University softball team edged host Bryan College 3-2 and 8-7 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play Monday. Bryan's Becca Zimmerman was 2-for-4 and scored a run in the first game, when Heidi Daniel and Mariam Wood had the Lady Lions' RBIs. Those two homered and drove in three and two runs in game two, when Wood and Katelyn Bowen each was 2-for-3 and Katie Vaughn was 3-for-4 and scored twice for Bryan (17-18, 6-4). Katie Rietkovich had two RBIs in each game and scored three in the doubleheader for Reinhardt (32-7, 12-2). Bryan hosts Tennessee Wesleyan in another AAC doubleheader today, beginning at 3 p.m.

Running

• Dalton State signed Paul Schupp from Kennesaw, Ga., on Sunday to join the Roadrunners' cross country team. The 5-foot-11 Schupp ran a 15:40 5k for North Cobb High School amd was its most valuable runner the last two years. "Paul is an exceptional talent and student," Andy Meyer, one of DSC's coaches, said in a school release. "We have watched him mature and perform superbly in a very competitive ATC region."

Bowling

• The TNBA team of Micah Kidd, Johnathan Norman, Chansen Hurt and Royce Johnson won both the handicap and scratch titles in the 2014 City Men's Bowling Tournament the past two weekends at Holiday Bowl Brainerd, and Hurt was the all-events scratch winner with a total of 2,351 pins. Chris Cross and Chris Massengale set a doubles scratch record of 1,593, and Hurt and Russell Gilbert rolled series of 803 and 802. Travis Staten had a 300 game. The Sunday's Best team comprised of Janet Hall, Summer Cook, Stacia Haro and Pamela Blackwell was the best women's handicap and scratch foursome, and Tracy Bleil was the all-events scratch winner with a 1,979.
