John Millard leaving as East Hamilton soccer coach for Battle Ground Academy job

John Millard has resigned as head soccer coach at East Hamilton, effective at the end of the 2014 boys' season. He will move into an administrative role at Battle Ground Academy.

Millard, whose boys' and girls' teams have combined for 129 wins in his five years at East Hamilton, accepted the position of director at student life at BGA, a private school in Franklin, Tenn., that competes in the Division II-A classification.

"This gives me the opportunity to do all the things I love and also get into school leadership, which has always intrigued me," Millard said Tuesday evening. "This way I can continue in the classroom, but I can stay involved in the soccer world and continue coaching."

Along with his work at East Hamilton, Millard also does club work with Chattanooga United, Redoubt FC and the Tennessee Olympic Developmental Program -- along with helping with the Chattanooga Football Club, which begins play on May 10. He said he will continue to work with those programs in some capacity, along with working with some clubs in Nashville.

Millard has been with the Hurricanes since the program's inception. He was 65-25-7 as the girls' coach, with three district championships and a pair of region titles, while amassing a record of 64-18-5 coaching the boys, which includes a 2-4-2 mark this season.

His boys' teams won three district championships and three region titles and advanced to two Class A/AA state tournaments, falling in the semifinals in 2011 before a first-round exit last year.

"It was a great experience, working at East Hamilton, being surrounded by great colleagues and working with great kids and for a great team of administrators," Millard said. "It's obviously a unique situation to build a program, start from scratch and put your thumbprint on it, but you're only successful if players buy in, and I had some great players that bought in over the past five years."

His Hurricanes have yet to play a district match -- their first in 5-AAA. They will start Thursday when they host Walker Valley.

East Hamilton is in the process of interviews to fill the coaching voids.
