An 80-year-old man was killed at about 5 p.m. today when his pickup truck was struck by a Norfolk Southern train at a crossing in Dade County, Ga., authorities said.

Alvin G. Yount, of Chattanooga, died when the train struck his white Chevrolet pickup truck, Sheriff Ray Cross said.

The accident occurred at the crossing at the intersection of Carroll Road and U.S. Highway 11, the sheriff said.

According to witnesses, the truck was behind another vehicle and the driver got stuck on the tracks.

The truck was struck on the passenger side and appeared to have been wrapped around the front of the train, which traveled about three-tenths of a mile before it was able to stop.

The driver was the only person in the truck, according to authorities.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident.
