Monteagle police chief shoots, kills fellow hunter

Saturday, April 5, 2014

A hunting accident Thursday morning involving Monteagle Chief of Police Virgil McNeece left another man dead.

About 7 a.m., McNeece, 46, and Stanley Whitman, 41, both of Grundy County, were turkey hunting in the Richard City area of Marion County.

Somehow McNeece shot Whitman, said Dan Hicks, spokesman for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

Whitman was taken to Erlanger hospital by air ambulance. He died Friday afternoon.

The incident is being investigated by the TWRA as a hunting accident, and information will be presented to the district attorney Monday, Hicks said.

The DA will decide what to do next, and more information might be made available then.

No statement had been released by McNeece or the Monteagle Police Department as of Friday evening.
