Cleveland State swept visiting Volunteer State in TCCAA softball Sunday, 3-2 and 11-4. In the opener, Hannah Powell was 3-for-3 with a home run and two runs as the Cougars rallied from an early 1-0 deficit. Jennifer Keam had two hits and Ashley Swaney knocked in a pair of runs to secure the complete-game pitching victory for Ida Watson. There was little drama in the second game, as Cleveland State used a nine-run third inning to put the game away. Tori Roberts homered, and Miranda Smith was 3-for-4 at the plate. Emily Hutson and Perry Hindi each had two hits and scored twice in the blowout victory. Starting pitcher Kelsey Haney gave up 10 hits, but she had nine strikeouts and limited Volunteer State to just four runs (all in the fifth inning) to pick up her eighth win of the season.

• The Bryan College softball team swept an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader from Columbia (S.C.) College on Saturday, 12-4 and 3-1. Heather Daniel was 3-for-3 with a home run and Kaitie Sims pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts in the close win for the Lady Lions (21-18, 10-4). In the other game, Taylor Yates was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Katie Vaughn was 2-for-3 with a homer and matched Katelyn Bowen with three RBIs, and Heidi Daniel, Becca Zimmerman and Olivia Gore each had two hits and scored a run; Mariam Wood was 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.

• SAA leader Birmingham-Southern completed a four-game softball sweep at Sewanee with 20-2 and 14-0 wins Sunday. The Panthers won 9-0 and 15-0 on Saturday, when Sewanee (3-19, 0-14) totaled two hits -- one in each game by Tori Haugvoll. Gabby Sanders knocked in both runs for Sewanee on Sunday and Kate Heil went 2-for-2 and scored a run in the loss.

Baseball

Chattanooga State split Saturday's doubleheader at Jackson State, losing the opening game 5-2 and winning the second game 3-2, and the tigers lost 11-1 in Sunday's series finale.

• Cleveland State beat Motlow College 11-1 in seven innings in their TCCAA baseball series finale Sunday at Cleveland. The Cougars scored three runs in the top of the first to grab an early lead, addes six in the fifth and two in the seventh to end the game early. Zack Janes and Chris Caffrey each went 4-for-4 at the plate, and Caffrey hit a grand slam in the fifth. Jake Wright also homered in the win, and Evan Speicher and Cameron Strickland each had two hits. Josh Morgan allowed three hits and struck out four to get the complete-game victory.

n Sewanee completed its weekend Southern Athletic Association baseball series Sunday with a 10-0 loss to visiting Centre College. The Tigers only managed three hits, and Charles Warren took the pitching loss.

Cycling

King University cyclist Megan Rogers of Soddy-Daisy won the criterium and finished third in the women's Cat B road race over the weekend in competition at Milligan College. In the men's Cat C road race, Red Bank graduate T.J. Killelea finished 11th. Rogers, Killelea and the rest of the Tornado cyclists will try to defend their Souteastern Collegiate Cycling Conference title next weekend at Central Florida in Orlando.

Track & Field

• Sewanee's Amy Nelson set a school record in the women's hammer throw with a second-place 40.67-meter toss Friday in the Hilltop Twilight Classic in Birmingham, and teammate Caroline Roberts was the 3000 steeplechase runner-up. Sewanee got third-place men's finishes from Amiel Emerson in the 800 and Cortez Brown in the 100, just ahead of teammate Josh Hirakawa. Also finishing fourth were Alec Hill in the men's 1500, Thomas Walters in the pole vault and Caroline Brooks in the women's 1500.

Tennis

• Lee University tennis coach Tony Cavett reached 300 combined victories with 9-0 men's and women's victories Saturday against Emmanuel College at Lee's DeVos Courts. Also Saturday, the Flames lost 5-1 and the Lady Flames fell 5-2 in Gulf South Conference matches against Delta State.

Rugby

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's rugby team wrapped up the season with a 46-0 win over Sewanee. Ebony Freeman scored twice, and seniors Karly North and Megan Scott each scored once. Kala Fritz was successful on three conversion attempts.
