CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A Doughboy statue in Middle Tennessee is getting ready to undergo repairs.

The Leaf-Chronicle reports a sculptor will repair a broken hand and replace the gun on the World War I Memorial, which has been vandalized multiple times since being restored and rededicated in 2010 downtown Clarksville.

City leaders say they want the Doughboy to be better protected in the future and are looking at two options after repairs are completed.

One option would be to move the Doughboy statue to Clarksville's Patriots Park. Another option would be to leave it where it is, erect a fence around it and add security cameras.

Parks and Recreations Director Mark Tummons and City Council Woman Deanna McLaughlin said they favor moving the Doughboy to Patriots Park.

"It's a good (spot)," Tummons said. "It's as good as anywhere else. I'd like to look at (the idea.)"

McLaughlin she thinks the park would offer more protection against vandals.

"It makes the most sense to me," she said.

Officials are getting cost estimates for both options and plan to make a decision before repairs are completed in June.
