Sewanee hires Tom Campbell from Centre College

Sewanee has gone to one of its rivals for its new women's basketball coach.

Tom Campbell will take over the Tigers team on July 1 after serving as a women's basketball assistant at Centre College in Danville, Ky., since 2007. An accomplished amateur golfer, he has been the men's golf head coach at the Danville, Ky., school since 2010.

Centre, like Sewanee (officially the University of the South), is in the Southern Athletic Association, and they were together in two previous NCAA Division III conferences.

"Coach Campbell brings many years of coaching success to Sewanee," athletic director Mark Webb said in a school release. "He is an outstanding teacher of basketball as well as an accomplished recruiter to a highly selective, small liberal arts college. I am confident that our women's basketball program will thrive under his leadership."

Before his arrival, Centre's women won 17 games in three seasons. Since he joined the staff, the Colonels have gone112-51 with a league record of 73-23. In 2012 they won the conference tournament and reached the Division III Sweet 16.

Campbell's 2010 golf team finished 13th in the NCAA tournament.

"I am truly humbled and blessed to have this opportunity," said Campbell, a 1992 Transylvania graduate who coached there and at Kentucky Wesleyan. "I appreciate the faith that the school, the administration and Mark Webb have shown in me. It is an honor to follow Dickie McCarthy, someone I have a great deal of respect for.

"I am grateful for the last seven years at Centre College and to have been a part of many wonderful things. I have grown as a person and as a coach."
