UTC men fifth at SoCon golf championship - and more Chattanooga region sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is four shots off the lead and in fifth place after the first day of play a the Southern Conference Championship. The Mocs shot 9-over-par 297 on Sunday at the National Golf Club, one shot behind Furman and Georgia Southern and within striking distance of co-leaders Davidson and Western Carolina at 294. UTC started the day slow before putting together some birdies on the middle holes, but they slumped down the stretch, shooting seven-over for the final three holes. Liam Johnston leds the Mocs individually with a 1-over 73 to tie for seventh place, and Chris Robb and Ewan Scott are one shot back and tied for 13th. Wes Gosselin shot a 76, and Davis Bunn is tied for 41st after shooting an 81. Western Carolina's J.T. Poston leads the tournament after shooting a 4-under 68. UTC will begin the second round today at 9:40 a.m.

Softball

• Bryan College is seeded fourth for the Appalachian Athletic Conference softball tournament that starts Tuesday at Domtar Park in Kingsport, Tenn., and Tennessee Wesleyan is seeded seventh in the eight-team field. Bryan (25-20, 12-6), which had its scheduled doubleheader Saturday at St. Andrews rained out, opens the double-elimination tournament at 11 a.m. Tuesday against fifth seed Columbia College (26-14, 11-9). TWC (13-25, 9-11) is set to play at 3 p.m. against second seed Milligan (20-15, 16-4), after top-seeded Reinhardt (37-8, 17-3) faces Point (17-25, 8-12).

• The 15th annual Lady Mocs softball appreciation dinner is set for May 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Stadium Club at Finley Stadium, and tickets cost $15. They will be available at UTC's May 3-4 games against Western Carolina, or reservations may be made by calling Mike Burke at 877-2080 or 315-2046. The dinner will be preceded by a social hour beginning at 5:30.

Football

• The Chattanooga-based Tennessee Train improved their Women's Football Alliance season record to 2-1 with a 30-6 road win Saturday night against the Cincinnati Sizzle, which is owned by former Bengals star Ickey Woods. The Train won only one game in their inaugural season last year.

Track & Field

• Lee University got first-place finishes in the Mountain Laurel Twilight Invitational track and field meet Friday at Sewanee from Mike Walker in the 800- and 3000-meter runs, Camden Perez in the 3000 steeplechase, Terris Elliott in the 1500, Brianna Prugh in the women's 800, Emily Bryan in the 400 hurdles and Kayla Gash in the shot put. Host Sewanee won the men's 4x100 and 4x400 relays in the seven-school competition, and the Tigers' Amy Nelson in the women's discus and hammer throw, Josh Hirawaka in the men's 110 hurdles and high jump and Willow Smith in the women's 3000 were event runners-up. Dalton State's Isaac Pacheco finished between Lee's Walker and third-place Joseph Crook in the men's 3000, and other thirds went to Lee's Ashley Matthews in the women's 3000, Storyie Miller in the 800, Gash in the discus, Justin Knuth in the 1500 and Patrick Shultz in the 3000 steeple and Sewanee's Cortez Brown in the 100.
