A former Hamilton County sheriff has endorsed Chris Harvey for sheriff in the upcoming May 6 Republican primary election.

In a statement released this morning, John Cupp, who served as sheriff for 12 years, threw his support behind Harvey, who is challenging Sheriff Jim Hammond.

"As Sheriff he will face many difficult administrative challenges," Cupp said in a prepared statement. "I know the safety of all Sheriff's Office employees, the security of the jail, and the citizens of Hamilton County will be a priority for him. He will not forget our young people but will partner with community organizations to help improve and strengthen our community. He will not forget the needs of our young people."

Whoever wins the May 6 election likely becomes sheriff as there are no Democrats in the race.

Early voting ends Thursday.
