Tornado warning issued in western Georgia

ATLANTA - Forecasters have issued a tornado warning for several areas of western Georgia.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning covering parts of Coweta, Heard, Meriwether and Troup counties that was expected to expire around 7:45 p.m.

Forecasters say a radar spotted a storm near Hogansville that was capable of producing a tornado that could travel northeast at a rate of about 30 mph.

Meteorologists say tornado warnings mean a strong wind rotation has been detected, and that a tornado may either already be on the ground or could touch down shortly.

Officials are urging residents to move indoors, stay away from windows and take shelter in basements. Forecasters say drivers should not take shelter under highway overpasses, but should seek shelter in a ditch and protect their heads.
