A 66-year-old man was in stable condition Wednesday after his East Chattanooga duplex went up in flames early Tuesday morning.

Chattanooga firefighters responded to the blaze at 2103 Daisy St. just after midnight Tuesday and arrived to find the entire front part of the duplex engulfed in flames.

Capt. Ashley May and Lt. Alex Cole entered the duplex and found 66-year-old Allen Smith unconscious in the back of the duplex. They pulled Smith out and administered oxygen, but he was unresponsive.

"We searched both sides of the structure, and on the right side in the very back in the bathroom, we found a male victim," May said in a video statement. "We attempted to get him up, finally got him up, dragged him through the living room and got him outside."

Smith was transferred to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., Tuesday for further treatment. He lived alone in one side of the duplex, and another man lived in the other side. The second man was uninjured but was displaced by the fire. One of two pet dogs died in the fire, spokesman Bruce Garner said.

Firefighters spent about 30 minutes getting the blaze under control and responded with four companies. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters said they believe the duplex was equipped with working smoke detectors.

The American Red Cross was called in to provide assistance to the victims and Chattanooga police assisted on the scene.
