Whitfield County investigators seek identity of man who ran in front of train and was killed

Whitfield County, Ga., investigators are asking for help identifying a man who was hit by a train and killed Monday night.

Witnesses said the victim ran in front of the train on South Dug Gap Road in southern Whitfield County.

The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Monday. The train conductor and another witness on the train said the man jumped onto the tracks and ran toward the train intentionally.

The train was moving about 40 miles per hour when it struck the victim, Capt. Rick Swiney said in a news release. Investigators believe the victim was white and in his 20s.

The victim had short hair, a trimmed narrow beard and a goatee. He was wearing a blue Nike T-shirt with the sleeves cut off, as well as black Nike tennis shoes and a black baseball cap with the logo for Monster energy drinks on the front.

He was not carrying any identification. The body has been transported for autopsy, Swiney said.

Investigators ask that anyone with information on the case call the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office at 706-278-1233.
