ECORSE, Mich. - An 18-year-old Michigan woman who went missing after reporting she'd stopped to check on a person lying in a rural roadside ditch was found alive more than 16 hours later after jumping from a slow-moving vehicle, police said.
Ecorse police Cpl. Chris Trevino told the Detroit Free Press that a motorist in the Detroit suburb saw the woman jump about 2:30 p.m. Friday from the vehicle, which sped away. The motorist took the woman to the police station, Trevino said, and she was taken to a hospital.
Details on the woman's condition weren't released, but Trevino said she was able to talk to police, saying she had been abducted and at one point had been "hooded." Trevino said she was upset and he described her as not very talkative.
The Associated Press left messages Saturday seeking updates from police in Ecorse and the sheriff's department in Monroe County, where the woman was reported missing from Bedford Township, about 45 miles from Ecorse.
Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Jeff Pauli told the Free Press on Saturday that the woman was "home and resting comfortably" as authorities continue to look for a suspect.
"We're investigating all facts, all possibilities," he said. "We have not arrived at a conclusion."
Authorities confirmed Friday that the woman had been found alive but released few details.
According to the Monroe County sheriff's department, the woman had gone to a video store and was on the phone with a friend Thursday night when she stopped in Bedford Township, located near the Ohio border. She told her friend a man was following her with a gun, and then the call was disconnected.
The sheriff's department said her friend called her father, who later found her unoccupied vehicle idling. An air and ground search was launched, with local authorities, state police and the FBI involved.
