The case of a Sequatchie County, Tenn., man charged in May with shooting another man in the legs with an assault weapon has been bound over to a grand jury.

Dunlap, Tenn., resident James Stockwell, 24 when he was arrested in May, was charged that month with shooting victim Chris Sims multiple times with a .45-caliber Uzi-style weapon, Sheriff Ronnie Hitchcock said at the time of Stockwell's arrest.

Stockwell was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, records show.

Sims was wounded in the legs and had to undergo surgery, according to authorities.

Hitchcock said Monday that Sims, 28 at the time of the shooting, has recovered from surgery to mend his wounds.

"He's doing well. He's up and going, and he's back at work, as far as I know," Hitchcock said.

Sims was at home on Bostontown Road northeast of Dunlap when Stockwell came over, authorities said. The two men got into an argument over money, and when the dispute escalated into gunfire Sims and his mobile home were sprayed with bullets.

Mike Taylor, district attorney for the 12th Judicial District, said Monday that the case now will go before the grand jury to consider for an indictment. If the grand jury issues an indictment, the case will be moved to Circuit Court. An arraignment in Circuit Court is set for Sept. 26.

Assistant District Attorney Steve Strain said the victim and Sequatchie County Sheriff's Office detective Jody Lockhart testified in the grand jury hearing.

Sequatchie County Jail officials said Stockwell is being held without bond at the Bledsoe County Jail.
