Third baseman Daniel Mayora has been a big factor in the Chattanooga Lookouts' nine-game winning streak, and Monday he was honored as the Southern League player of the week. Mayora went 12-for-23 for a gaudy .522 batting average in the six games included in the honor, and he had a home run, a triple, two doubles and six RBIs. He is hitting .335 with 17 extra-base hits and 28 RBIs since the league's all-star break, and his 61 hits lead all of Class AA baseball during that time. Now 23-25 in the second half and just one game out of first place in their division, the Lookouts begin a five-home game series against Jacksonville tonight at 7:15 at AT&T Field. Andres Santiago (3-7, 4.72 ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Chattanooga; Jose Urena (10-7, 3.51) goes for the Suns.

• McCallie School graduate Jorden Williams from Chattanooga had a very good freshman basketball season for Sewanee last winter, and his summer wasn't too bad, either. Williams played in the Rocky Top Pilot League in Knoxville and more than held his own. He averaged 19.2 points a game, which was the highest average for any player not from an NCAA Division I program, and he was 27-of-59 (45.8 percent) from 3-point range. The league included former University of Tennessee players Wayne Chism, Bobby Maze and Cameron Tatum and current Volunteers Josh Richardson, Willie Carmichael, Kevin Punter and Jabari McGhee. Marquette, Old Dominion, East Tennessee State, Middle Tennessee State and Presbyterian also were represented. Williams was the third leading scorer in the Southern Athletic Association as a freshman with 16.1 points a game, and he led in free-throw percentage at .886. He made the All-SAA second team.
