Dalton State College will be dedicating the renovated court of Bandy Gymnasium in honor of Melvyn Ottinger on Sept. 5 during the 7 p.m. volleyball match against Brewton-Parker. "Coach O" had a 10-year run of 228-78 with Dalton Junior College men's basketball during the 1970s, and he continued to teach at the school after it dropped the athletic program and eventually became a four-year institution. Ottinger was one of the behind-the-scenes forces in reviving the Roadrunners tradition. "We are blessed to have the private support to be able to upgrade athletic facilities on campus," DSC athletic director Derek Waugh said in a school release. "The new floor at Bandy Gymnasium looks fantastic, our volleyball team should be very good this year and we are honoring a man who put a lot of sweat equity into this institution. It should be a great night."
