Mocs' Mackezyk preseason All-SoCon and other sports

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior midfielder Crystal Mackezyk was voted to the 11-player preseason All-Southern Conference team for women's soccer, and the Mocs were picked to finish 10th out of 11 teams in the coaches' poll released Thursday. Furman had five all-conference players and got eight first-place votes, while Samford and UNC Greensboro got one No. 1 pick apiece in finishing second and third in the balloting. Mackezyk led UTC last season with six goals and seven assists.

• The Covenant College men's soccer team got one first-place vote and was picked to finish fourth out of 11 teams in the USA South Conference this season, and the Covenant Lady Scots were picked sixth. Greensboro College edged Methodist 5 to 4 in firsts and 93 to 91 in total points to lead the men's balloting. Maryville got one first and was third with 81 points to Covenant's 79. The Maryville women were second to Piedmont by a point. In the volleyball coaches' poll, Maryville was picked first and Covenant third with a first-place vote in the league's South Division, and the two sets of Lady Scots were first and fifth in the overall rankings.

Basketball

• Mallory Wade, who played basketball at Soddy-Daisy High School, recently signed scholarship papers to continue her career at Bryan College. Wade said she visited the Dayton school around the beginning of summer and "really liked the campus, and the people I met on the team." The 5-foot-11 Wade primarily played in the post for the Lady Trojans but particularly as a senior showed an ability to make shots from 3-point range. "We noticed she started shooting in practice more from outside, and during the offseason she started working more on it," said Juan Hansford, Wade's AAU coach for three years with the Tennessee Xtreme. "She helped us in that aspect as an outside shooter, and as a rebounder." Wade plans to major in health and exercise science.

Fishing

• David Dudley of Lynchburg, Fla., took the first-day lead Thursday in FLW's Forrest Wood Cup bass tournament on Lake Murray in South Carolina. His five keepers totaled 17 pounds 14 ounces, while Cody Meyer of Auburn, Calif., and Bryan Thrift of Shelby, N.C., were next with 14-9 each. Brad Knight of Wartburg, Tenn., was fourth with 13-7, and Kellogg's Angler of the Year Andy Morgan of Dayton, Tenn., was eighth with 12-10. Spring City's Wesley Strader was 27th with 7-14, and Dayton's Michael Neal was 41st with 2-0.
