NASHVILLE - Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke will endorse 4th Congressional District Democratic nominee Lenda Sherrell next week, the Sherrell campaign says.

Berke, a former state Democratic senator who once represented Marion County, will lmake his endorsement when Sherrell visits the after-school program, Educating Youth Ensures Success (EYES) in South Pittsburg in Marion County.

Sherrell ran unopposed in last week's Democratic primary. She will face either incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais, R-Tenn., or his GOP primary challenger Jim Tracy. Unofficial returns show DesJarlais, a South Pittsburg physician, is up by 38 votes over Tracy, a state senator from Shelbyville.

Results from the election won't be certified until Aug. 25. Tracy has refused to concede and it is unclear whether he will seek a recount or possibly challenge the contest's outcome before the Tennessee Republican Party's Executive Committee, acting in its capacity as the GOP's State Primary Board.
