Masingill, McCallie guests of honor at new fundraiser

What: More than 400 guests attended the Alton Park Development Corp.'s first fundraiser, held at Stratton Hall, that included a celebrity roast and presentation of the new John P. Franklin Humanitarian Award. Local radio legend Luther Masingill was in "the hot seat" as the first celebrity to be roasted for the benefit.

Honoree: Franklin McCallie received the inaugural humanitarian award for his efforts to promote desegregation, civil rights and better race relations.

Benefits: Dr. Eleanor Woods said donations are still being collected toward the $75,000 goal. Proceeds help the corporation improve the lives of Alton Park and Piney Woods residents with vocational programs, educational scholarships, youth programs and literacy initiatives.


Colbie Caillat sells out StarNight

What: Just over 1,400 guests attended StarNight at the Chattanooga Convention Center, selling out its concert by Colbie Caillat. The black-tie gala was chaired by Charles and Betty Lebovitz.

Benefits: Siskin Children's Institute.
