Geno Phillips and Jessica Marlier were the overall winners in the Affordable Botox SuperHero 10-kilometer road race Saturday morning at Enterprise South Nature Park, and John Sillery and Emily Bell were first and second overall in the 5k. The event benefits the Make A Wish Foundation of East Tennessee. Phillips finished the longer race in 35 minutes, 26 seconds, and Marlier was fifth overall in 39:52, behind Andy Highlander (36:44), Daniel McGinley (38:01) and masters winner Ryan Shrum (38:03). Jennifer Curtis was the female runner-up and eighth overall in 43:39. Sillery ran the 5k in 18:51, and Bell was next in 20:47 with Jon Melanson third in 23:07.
Volleyball
• Dalton State began the area college volleyball season Saturday by beating Tennessee Temple 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) and winning 3-1 over Milligan (25-20, 23-25, 25-13, 25-20) at Dalton State. Milligan downed Temple 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-20). For DSC's Lady Roadrunners, Michala Askew had 15 assists against TTU and 35 assists and 13 digs against Milligan, while Anna Metzler and Savannah Nelson had nine and eight kills and then 13 apiece, Metzler with nine and 12 digs. Alyne Bianchi had 10 kills and seven kills, and Anna Dykes had nine against the Lady Buffs. For Temple against DSC, Naomi Pasada, Shatoya Medford and Victoria Smith had seven kills each.
Softball
• Just as the 2014-15 school year is getting started, Tennessee Temple University softball coach Randy Crawford signed two potential standouts for the 2015-16 year: catcher-infielder Tatyana Najeeullah from East Ridge High School and another high school senior, pitcher Nicole Woodward from Buffalo, N.Y. Pitcher and catcher are good places to start for fastpitch, and Crawford said, "We're finally getting ahead on the recruiting. We've been so behind since we started this program." Najeeullah "has a lot of power and she has a super attitude and work ethic," he said. "I knew when she was a freshman and we were beginning the program at Temple that I would love to have her play for me one day." Crawford used to help East Ridge coach Sandy Mauser, who said, "I've really enjoyed coaching this kid. She's a great leader by example, and very humble. She has great catching instincts and could play a lot of places, and she's a workaholic at the plate." Of Woodward, Crawford noted, "She's a left-handed pitcher with a lot of movement on the ball."
Soccer
• The Bryan College soccer teams swept a home doubleheader Saturday against Toccoa Falls, the Lady Lions winning their season opener 5-2 and the Lions rising to 2-0 with a 1-0 victory. Tennessee Temple's Crusaders were awarded a forfeit win over Hiwassee.
• The Tennessee Wesleyan women's soccer team opened its season Saturday night with a 1-1 tie at Brenau in Gainesville, Ga. Brenau was ranked 17th in the NAIA preseason poll.
Football
• The Chattanooga Quarterback Club kicks off its 2014-15 season Monday with UTC football coach Russ Huesman as guest speaker for the noon luncheon meeting at Finley Stadium. The public is invited. • The "Chat With the Mocs" weekly interactive radio show hosted by Jim Reynolds began another season this past Thursday from Jefferson's Restaurant at Fountain Square, and it will be on Tuesday the next two weeks, from 7 to 8 p.m. The show presented by Budweiser is on the new radio home for UTC sports, 96.1 The Beat. Mocs fans are encouraged to be at the restaurant for the live broadcast.
