Man rescued in Pocket Wilderness

A man who became ill in the Pocket Wilderness near Soddy-Daisy had to be rescued Saturday morning, authorities said.

The Mowbray Volunteer Fire Department responded when the 21-year-old called 911 about 8 a.m., according to Hamilton County Emergency Services spokeswoman Amy Maxwell.

He was about four miles back on the trail and said he'd been there since Friday night. He did not have enough water and food to replenish his body and said that he began to experience signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion, dehydration and fatigue, Maxwell said.

All told, 40 first responders participated in the seven-hour rescue. The man was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Fire damages Hixson home

A fire in Hixson caused substantial damage to a home at 6209 North Innsbrook Drive early Saturday morning.

The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 3 a.m., and five fire companies responded, according to a news release from the Chattanooga Fire Department.

Battalion Chief Charles Patten said in the release that smoke and flames were visible in the attached garage when firefighters arrived. Two adults in the house escaped safely.
