Bicyclist killed in accident in Athens, Tenn.

Police responded to a crash that killed a white male bicyclist who was hit by a red 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix Monday night about 9:50 p.m. in Athens, Tenn., according to a news release from the police department.

The crash happened near the intersection of Decatur Pike Eastbound and Hughes Street. The officers arrived and CPR was attempted on the bicyclist who showed no signs of life, until EMS arrived on the scene, the release said.

The driver of the car, Mitchell D. Johnson, was arrested for driving on a suspended license. Additional charges are pending until the completion of the investigation.

According to a witness, the victim was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk in the westbound direction when he turned into the flow of traffic. Johnson was unable to stop in time and hit the victim, the release said.
