On balance, scales auction could be fun outing - Aug. 31

Scales that can weigh everything from jellybeans to jalopies have been part of the Phil and George Anna Wehman collection. Before their deaths, they accumulated more than 1,000 individual pieces. At 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, their "overwhelmed" son and daughter will provide about 700 to be auctioned.

To see the collection is to marvel at the wide world of weights and measures. There are candy scales and egg scales, people scales and baby scales, postal scales and coin scales, scales to weigh trucks and scales to weigh cotton.

"They range from the size of your little finger to 7 feet tall," says daughter Melissa Wehman.

She says her favorite is a scale to weigh jockeys before a horse race. Family members have picked out a few to keep as sentimental favorites, and some are available on eBay (look for philscales).

Many of the ones up for auction can be viewed at wehmanscales.com. Meek's Auctions, 5006 Dayton Blvd., will see how many they can disperse Sunday. Early bids and shipping are available.
