Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park rangers tell the story of Civil War artillery in a living-history day at Chickamauga Battlefield on Sunday, Aug. 31.

The 30-minute programs will be presented near the Visitor Center, 3370 LaFayette Road in Fort Oglethorpe, at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.

According to historians, the North Georgia battle would have been a nightmare for the soldiers who experienced it in 1863. The forest was the last place a Civil War battle should have been fought.

The dense foliage made it impossible to see, for commanders to lead and, in the case of artillery, to fight the way they were designed. Civil War cannon were weapons of mass destruction, intended to deliver death and devastation over long distances, which was impossible at Chickamauga in all but a few situations.

Admission to the programs is free.
