Signal Mountain rated among best - and more local business news

The city of Signal Mountain is rated as one of the best suburbs in America, according to a review by the online publication Business Insider.

Signal Mountain, which has a population of 7,554, ranked No. 11 among the suburban cities studied - the highest of any suburban city in Tennessee. Signal Mountain is just 22 minutes from the heart of downtown and boasts a median household income of $81,302, nearly double the statewide average. Signal Mountain has a relatively low crime and poverty rate and some of the best-performing public schools in the region.

"Current residents of Signal Mountain already know that it is a great place for families," RE/MAX Renaissance Realtor Grace Frank said. "Now, the word is getting out, which will prompt even more interest from potential residents who want to invest in the community."

The median home price of homes sold so far this year on Signal Mountain is $322,750, compared to $183,000 for all sales across southeast Tennessee.


Publix buys Hixson store

Publix Super Markets Inc., the Lakeland, Fla-based grocery chain that entered the Chattanooga market in 2007, has purchased its Hixson store and the Creek Plantation shopping center for $13 million.

The 54,720-square-foot supermarket in Hixson was built for Publix in 2009 and is part of an overall shopping center that includes 82,260 square feet on nearly 11 acres at 5928 Hixson Pike.

The center was previously owned by an Atlanta real estate partnership, CPV2, LLC, which sold the property last week, according to the Hamilton County Register of Deeds. Publix owns some of its stores and leases others.


Bradford offers free cab rides

Bradford Health Services will be offering free taxi cab rides for impaired drivers in Chattanooga during the holiday season from Dec. 15 through Dec. 31. Bradford said Tuesday it will pay for a taxi cab to pick up anyone 21 years old and older from a bar, lounge, or restaurant and take them home within a 30-mile radius.

"This could prevent a large number of D.U.I.'s, car wrecks, car wreck fatalities, and emergency room visits," said Debra K. Moore, community representative for Bradford. For more information, call Bradford at 866-246-3216.


Airport hosting charity event

Chattanooga Airport is hosting a family holiday charity event on Thursday.

Families can bring canned goods and winter clothing, including gloves, socks and blankets, to Lovell Field for the inaugural holiday charity event. Free parking is available for event attendees. All donated items will benefit the Community Kitchen.

People can arrive anytime between noon and 7 p.m., and they will receive free hot cocoa and photos with Santa. In addition, they can register for the chance to win two round-trip tickets to anywhere in the United States from Delta Air Lines.

AT&T adds 4G to Soddy-Daisy

AT&T said Tuesday it has expanded its 4G LTE network to Soddy Daisy, bringing more customers to its latest generation of wireless network technology.

AT&T launched 4G LTE in Chattanooga in April, 2013 to provide faster and more reliable service. The LTE technology is capable of delivering mobile Internet speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G and AT&T offers several LTE-compatible devices, including new AT&T 4G LTE smartphones and tablets.

AT&T has invested nearly $1.3 billion in its best-in-class wireless and wired networks in Tennessee between 2011 through 2013.

"As part of the Hamilton County and Soddy Daisy community, we're always looking for new opportunities to provide enhanced coverage, and our investment in our 4G LTE network is another way we're accomplishing that," said MaryStewart Lewis, regional director, external affairs, AT&T Tennessee.
