Accident on I-24 eastbound in Chattanooga closes roadway

Motorists are being rerouted off of Interstate 24 eastbound at exit 17, which is Cummings Highway, due to an accident.

The accident happened just before 9 p.m. Monday at mile marker 175. There were four people in the SUV which ran off the roadway, down an embankment and hit a tree. The driver at this time is the only one transported to the hospital. The extent of injuries to the other passengers has not been released.

The Interstate is shutdown to allow officers to reconstruct the scene. They did not have a time for when the road would be back open.
