Alabama store giving Super refunds

GARDENDALE, Ala. - Customers of a Birmingham-area jeweler are getting about $70,000 in refunds because of the Super Bowl.

Jeff Dennis Jewelers in Gardendale ran a promotion offering a cash refund on purchases if either Denver or Seattle scored a safety during the game.

Dennis tells AL.com he was thrilled when Seattle scored a safety on Denver's first offensive play, and so are customers.

Brian Nunnally, of Kimberly, is getting a refund on a $260 necklace he bought as a Valentine's gift for his wife.

The refunds don't come from Dennis' pocket: He buys an insurance policy through Lloyd's of London to cover the cost.

This is the third such promotion that has paid off for Dennis in three years. He says the gimmick helps by increasing sales.

Alzheimer's registry endorsed

ATLANTA - The Georgia Senate has endorsed legislation that would establish a state registry of people with Alzheimer's disease or related disorders.

State senators voted 45-6 on Monday to support establishment of the registry, which would be maintained by the Department of Public Health, to assist with public policy and planning. The bill allows for the disclosure of only nonidentifying data for planning and research.

The Senate also voted 45-5 in favor of creating the Georgia Adult and Aging Services Agency to work with community partners in business and local government to address adult and aging needs. Republican Sen. Renee Unterman, of Buford, says the agency would be funded with money appropriated to the state Division of Aging Services, which it would replace.

Both bills head to the House for consideration.
