Dakota Hudson 35th-ranked baseball college freshman

Former Sequatchie County High School ace Dakota Hudson has been ranked among the top 50 college freshmen by Baseball America. The two-time member of the Times Free Press Best of Preps team is rated No. 35 as he heads into his first season at Mississippi State.

Basketball

• Megan Billingsby had 20 points and 20 rebounds as the Bryan College women's basketball team beat visiting Columbia (S.C.) College 81-70 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference game Wednesday evening. Jenna Ray added 18 points and Keila Formont and Taylor Neuharth scored 13 and 11 for Bryan (16-8, 11-4). Thirteen of Billingsby's rebounds were offensive, and Kristin Lane added nine total rebounds.

• Maryville College beat visiting Covenant 99-47 in women's basketball and 79-49 in the men's game of the USA South doubleheader Wednesday. Chris Boyd with 13 points for the Covenant men (8-13, 3-7) was the only player from either of the Lookout Mountain school's teams to score in double figures. Alex Quimby led the Covenant women (5-15, 2-10) with nine points in 11 minutes of playing time. Lauren Trent and Mackenzie Puckett scored 21 and 19 for the Maryville women (17-3, 10-1). Maryville's men are 13-6, 9-0.

Tennis

• After having its scheduled first ever tennis competition washed out Sunday, Dalton State made its program debut Wednesday and lost 9-0 to nationally ranked Georgia Gwinnett in both women's and men's NAIA play at Lawrenceburg, Ga. The Gwinnett men are ranked No. 5, the female Grizzlies No. 20. "Georgia Gwinnett has one of the strongest programs in the NAIA or the NCAA," Roadrunners coach Zack Rogers said. "We did not play well in doubles, but I was encouraged by how we fought in singles. We are a work in progress, but we will be a very competitive program in year one and especially as we gain experience.
