EDITOR'S NOTE

Barry Courter has a 24-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 20-year-old daughter who is a sophomore in college.

Q: Dad, this recent snow event sort of a reminded that I am ill prepared for an emergency. What should I have on hand?

A: It was a reminder for me, too. You can go online and find a list of recommendations, but you should have water, some cash, blankets, a good coat, warm shoes, food and a flashlight with fresh batteries. A box of snack bars and some bottled water will stay fresh through a season at least and will get you through a day or two. And keep your phone charged. I'm thinking that this stuff not only should be in your trunk along with jumper cables but in your apartment as well.
