Chattanooga State opens softball season with three wins

The Chattanooga State softball team opened its 2014 season Friday with three victories in Atmore, Ala., beginning with a 10-7 defeat of host and reigning NJCAA Division I champion Wallace State-Hanceville.

Sharlene Godoy was the winning pitcher in relief in that game and in a 6-5 defeat of Southern Union that came on a walk-off three-run home run by Emily Dagnan, who was 3-for-4 while Baylee Williams and Syndey Sloan each doubled and singled. In between was a 4-3 win over Snead State in which Shelby Willard struck out nine batters and allowed three hits in six innings and Hanna Manley got the save.

Izzy McCurry was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs and Courtney Crawford was 2-for-3 with a double against Snead, when Dana Horgan tripled after going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs against Wallace. Dagnan was 2-for-3 with an inside-the-park homer against the national champs.

• At Clearwater, Fla., Lee University lost 14-0 to Saint Leo and 6-2 to Tampa as the Eckerd College tournament got under way. Ana Coscorrosa was 3-for-4 and scored one of the runs against Tampa for the Lady Flames (1-2).

Flames win two

Center fielder Siosi Poti went 5-for-6 with three stolen bases, six runs batted in and four runs scored as Lee University beat Kentucky State 11-1 and 10-0 in baseball Friday at Olympic Field in Cleveland. The teams are scheduled to play another game at noon today.

Poti was 3-for-3 with a triple, a double, two steals and five RBIs in game one Friday, and Derrick Pitts was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and three runs in game two for the Flames (5-0). Zacary Hawkins was 3-for-3 in the second game after scoring twice in the opener, when Zack Zyburt was 2-for-2 with three runs and Seth Gower hit a two-run homer as a pinch hitter for Poti in the leadoff spot. Jordan Stewart also had two RBIs in the first game, and Cameron Scott had two in game two.

Jeremy Stawychny allowed two hits and struck out seven batters in four innings in game one. Nikolay Uherek struck out six in four innnings in game two. Each is 2-0.

• Bryan 4-2, Rio Grande 1-4: At Dayton, L.J. Rowden rose to 2-0 with a complete-game six-hitter in game one for the host Lions, but the visitors prevented a sweep behind David Steele and two relievers.

Kevin Roberts and Joey Underwood each was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored and Cody Rhinehart homered in the first game for Bryan. Markus Makuch was 2-for-3 with a homer for Rio Grande and then was 2-for-3 with two runs as Anthony Knitter went 3-for-3 and Chris Ford batted in two in the second game. Preston King was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Bryan.
