Lee University senior guard Hollie German from Polk County was selected for the five-player Capital One Academic All-America Division II basketball team after being the College Division Academic All-American of the Year in 2013. German has scored 2,098 points for Lee teams that have gone 106-18 -- 17-4 in the Lady Flames' first year in NCAA Division II -- and has a 3.95 grade point average as a math and secondary education major. She's averaging 24 points a game.

• After scoring 40 points and grabbing 23 rebounds in Monday's one-point loss to Montreat College, 6-foot-2 sophomore post player Brandon Cole from Crossville, Tenn., scored 34 points in Bryan College's 82-73 Appalachian Athletic Conference men's basketball loss Wednesday night at Union College in Kentucky. That gives him 1,118 points in his second college season. In the latest national stats, last year's AAC freshman of the year led NAIA Division II with 4.52 offensive rebounds per game and was No. 2 with 12.1 total rebounds a game, No. 2 in double-doubles with 18 and No. 6 in scoring with 25.48 points per game. Bryan is now 14-14 and 9-8 in the AAC.

• The Bryan women lost 69-66 at Union College in the first game of the doubleheader Wednesday in Barbourville, Ky. Keila Formont had 16 points and six assists for Bryan (18-10, 13-6 AAC). Victoria Griffin contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds and Kelsey Brooks scored 10.

• Tennessee Wesleyan split an AAC basketball doubleheader Wednesday evening at Virginia Intermont. The first-place and nationally 18th-ranked Lady Bulldogs won 74-68 and the TWC men lost 94-86.

• The Covenant College basketball teams split Wednesday against visiting Huntingdon in USA South play. Covenant's women won 70-67 and the Scots lost 84-81.

Wrestling

• January transfer Dawson Peck of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is the Southern Conferencewrestler of the week and now is listed 20th at 285 pounds in TheOpenMat.com Division I rankings. Peck is 11-1 for the Mocs after leaving Virginia Tech and went 2-0 in UTC losses to ranked teams last weekend. Peck won 8-2 and by pin, the latter against his 16th-ranked former Hokies teammate.

Baseball/Softball

• The Sewanee baseball team opened its season Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Johnson University. The Tigers won the first game 15-0 and won the second game 12-1. Tony Dykes was 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the first game. Jack Rogers contributed two hits and four RBIs in the opener and added two more hits and two more RBIs in the nightcap.

• Cleveland State lost 2-1 and won 6-5 in two extra innings in baseball games Tuesday at nationally ranked Georgia Perimeter. Jake Wright allowed only four hits in five innings in the loss for the Cougars (6-3), who benefited from opportunistic baserunning and two Dalton Rogers RBI hits after Jammer Strickland singles in pulling out the second game.

n Lee University pitchers Nikolay Uherek and Annabeth Pruett were the National Christian College Division I athletes of the week for baseball and softball. Uherek pitched a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 4-1 win in which Union University's run was unearned, and Pruett allowed just five hits and two runs in 10 2/3 innings in a doubleheader split against Union. She was the winner in game two.

• Cleveland State split a softball doubleheader Wednedsay against Gadsden State at Gadsden, Ala. The Lady Cougars won the first game 2-1 and lost the second 8-0. Chattanooga State beat Georgia Highlands 10-0 and 14-0 in Tuesday games and improved to 14-0. Chattanooga State hosts Cleveland State in doubleheaders Friday and Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. and noon.

Running

• Covenant runner Beth Burgess and both of the Lookout Mountain school's cross country teams were honored recently by the USTFCCCA for academic excellence. Burgess was named to the individual all-academic team recognizing the junior's 3.91 grade point average with a major in biology and two minors and her 18th-place finish at the NCAA Division III South Regional meet. She won the USA South conference race. The Lady Scots were honored as an all-academic team with an aggregate GPA of 3.59, the men likewise with a 3.29.
