Bill Barry announced this past week that he will be retiring from the Sewanee athletic department at the end of this school year after 45 years in various capacities with the Tigers. He was hired from the University of Tennessee as the Tigers' head athletic trainer in 1969 -- he had been the Volunteers' first full-time assistant trainer -- and became the facilities and business manager when the Fowler Center opened in 1994. He subsequently survived a bout with cancer. Barry has been in the Tennessee Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame since 2001 and the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame since 2011. "The coaches, athletic directors and support staff, along with the administration during this time, have been a pleasure to work with throughout my career," he said in a school release. "His many contributions to the athletics department over the past four and a half decades are immeasurable," athletic director Mark Webb said.
• Radio "Voice of the Mocs" Jim Reynolds will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. The entertaining Reynolds will talk about UTC basketball and football and the upcoming Southern Conference tournament.
Baseball
• With five- and four-run fifth innings, the Bryan College baseball team beat the NAIA's 19th-ranked Point Park University 6-2 and 5-4 on Saturday for a 3-1 series win. Crandon Wallace had two RBIs and Kevin Roberts and Grant Zawadzki each was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the first game for the Lions (7-8), Roberts scoring twice and Zawadzki once. Roberts and Zawadzki then had two RBIs apiece in the finale, when Preston King was 2-for-3 and Cody Rhinehart was 2-for-4.
• Tennessee Wesleyan lost 6-3 and won 8-5 against visiting Indiana Southeast in NAIA baseball Saturday. K.J. Hockaday drove in two of the first-game runs and was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run in game two for the Bulldogs (4-7), and Matt Malloy was 1-for-1 with a home run, a sacrifice fly and four RBIs.
• Garrett Kriston was one out from a no-hitter and settled for a one-hitter as Covenant College beat Milligan 2-0 in baseball Saturday on Lookout Mountain. Scott Gillespie and Chris Rollins had the RBIs in that game for the Scots, who lost 1-0 in the finale of the three-game weekend series.
• Tennessee Temple got its first baseball win of the season Saturday, 3-2 at Emory & Henry after a 4-2 loss to the Wasps. Trey Hill singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and Dylan Massengill earned the complete-game pitching win for the Crusaders (1-5).
• Cleveland State bounced back from a 17-2 loss with a 7-2 win Saturday in its opening TCCAA baseball doubleheader at Roane State. Bobby Towne was the winning pitcher for Cleveland State (7-4, 1-1), which scored six fifth-inning runs in game two. Jammer Strickland doubled in two and Chris Caffrey, Jared Davis and Wright Hackett singled in one each in the outburst, and Strickland added an RBI single in the seventh. Evan Speicher and Caffrey had RBI hits for the Cougars in the first game, when Roane got a grand slam from Bo Henson.
Softball
• The Chattanooga State softball team improved to 16-0 for the season by opening TCCAA play with a 9-1, 6-0 sweep of visiting Cleveland State on Saturday, on a three-hitter by Shelby Willard and a two-hitter by Sharlene Godoy, each with six strikeouts. The TCCAA rivals play another doubleheader today, starting at noon. Courtney Crawford was 5-for-8 for the day, and her three-run triple ended the first game in the fifth inning. Bailee Williams, Elyse Ferguson and Sydney Spurgeon each was 2-for-3 in that game, Williams with two doubles. Ferguson was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Godoy and Lindsey Stickrod each was 2-for-4 with an RBI in game two.
• Sara Kelley from Ooltewah stayed hot for the Carson-Newman softball team by going 3-for-4 with her seventh double of the season, an RBI and a run as Kalyn Davis pitched the program's first perfect game in five years in a 2-0 win Saturday at Erskine. That followed a 9-1 win for the Lady Eagles (11-1) in which Caitlyn Lance from Ridgeland was 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs and Kelley doubled in a run.
• Covenant College edged visiting Mount St. Joseph twice in softball Saturday, 7-6 and 5-4. Kendall Whann was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Jordan Brett was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs and Morgan Lane also was 2-for-4 in game one for the Lady Scots (2-2). Lane was 3-for-4 and Madison Quirk was 2-for-3 with a three-run double in the rematch, while Brett had a two-run double.
• The Tennessee Temple softball team dropped to 0-6 by losing 11-1 and 12-4 to Southern Wesleyan in a doubleheader played Saturday at Ooltewah High School.
Basketball
• Ish Sanders from Cleveland scored 31 points and made 7 of 11 3-point shots in Carson-Newman's 90-75 home basketball win Saturday against Queens of Charlotte.
