The 2014 River City Clarinet Winter Festival, open to professional, amateur and student musicians, will feature a concert by the festival participants at 4:30 p.m. Saturday and another by the guest artists/clinicians at 7:30 p.m.

Master classes for the musicians and performances for their fans will highlight the 2014 River City Clarinet Winter Festival, set for 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, on the UTC campus.

This is the third year that the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Department of Music and the Chattanooga Clarinet Choir have joined forces to present the clinics and concerts. Participation is open to student (high school and college), amateur and professional clarinetists.

New this year is the RCCWF High School Solo Competition. Clarinetists in grades 9-12 have registered to compete for a chance to perform in a master class and the festival choir concert. Those winners will be decided Friday, Jan. 3, in a closed performance for a panel of judges.

They will perform solos in the festival choir concert, which will start at 4:30 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Center.

Guest artists/clinicians this year are Oskar Espina-Ruiz, a member of the clarinet artist-faculty of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts; Nicholas Hartline, artistic director of the Chattanooga Clarinet Choir; Meghan Merciers, assistant professor of clarinet at the University of North Alabama; and Nikolasa Tejero, assistant professor of clarinet at UTC. They will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall.
