GATLINBURG, Tenn. - Construction on Newfound Gap Road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park beginning next week may slow traffic, but the road will remain open.

According to the park, the project will repair a slide approximately 1 mile south of the Newfound Gap parking area, just south of the Deep Creek trailhead.

The work begins Monday and will take until mid-May to complete. During construction, traffic lanes will shift onto the shoulder to maintain two-way traffic. However, some lane closures will be required intermittently. The parking area adjacent to the slide area will be closed, but the pull-off for the Deep Creek trailhead will remain open.

More information on road conditions is available on the park's website at www.nps.gov/grsm or by calling the park's road and weather information line at 865-436-1200.
