Six area high school football players were selected for next week's Tennessee-Kentucky National Guard Border Bowl. Boyd-Buchanan quarterback Jim Cardwell, Silverdale Baptist Academy defensive linemen Colton Rogers and Lincoln Phillips and Walker Valley linemen Colton Morrow and Garrett Moore and receiver/defensive back Tanner Dillard were picked for the Tennessee team. East Hamilton coach Ted Gatewood was selected to be an assistant. The game is set for Jan. 11 at 12:35 p.m. at the University of the Cumberlands and will be televised on Fox Sports South.
• Former Arts & Sciences players Kayla Kelly and Robyn Anthony from Chattanooga scored 12 and 11 points and Kelly added nine rebounds and three steals as Milligan gave the Bryan women's basketball team its first Appalachian Athletic Conference loss of the season Thursday night, 73-70. But host Bryan won the men's game, 90-81, as Brandon Cole continued his outstanding play with 32 points and 20 rebounds (nine offensive). Allison Jones led the Lady Buffs (9-6, 5-2) with 22 points, while Megan Billingsby scored 19 points and Kristin Lane had 16 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four assists for Bryan (10-5, 5-1). Helping Cole for the Bryan men (7-8, 3-2), Derrick Walker had 16 points, 12 rebounds and three steals, Bryan Landers scored 14 points and Alan Holt blocked four shots. Kurt Brooks had 19 points for Milligan (9-5, 3-3).
• The Tennessee Wesleyan women's basketball team began an AAC doubleheader Thursday at St. Andrews with a 63-37 victory, but the St. Andrews men followed with a 67-66 win. The Lady Bulldogs are 7-3, 4-2 in the league. The Bulldogs fell to 7-7, 4-2 with their victors rising to 2-7, 1-5.
• Ricky Sears had 24 points and three steals and Anthony Hilliard and Erich Allen scored 16 points apiece as the inaugural Dalton State College men's basketball team improved to 15-1 with a 98-75 win over visiting Reinhardt on Thursday. Sean Tate had nine assists for the Roadrunners, and Demetrice Jacobs had 12 points and three thefts. Quinton Wood led Reinhardt (7-7) with 14 points.
• Women's basketball assistant coach Katie Burrows, a former Lady Moc from Lookout Valley, will be the guest speaker for the UTC Mocs Club's "Breakfast With the Coach" this Saturday morning at 8:45 at Wally's Restaurant on McCallie Avenue. The public is invited and no reservations are required. The Lady Mocs open Southern Conference play Saturday night.
